U.S. Center for Maritime Innovation

Operated by ABS

The James M. Inhofe National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2023 (NDAA) directs the Secretary of Transportation, through a competitive cooperative agreement, to establish a United States Center for Maritime Innovation to support the study, research, development, assessment, and deployment of emerging marine technologies and practices related to the maritime transportation system (MTS).

Key Activities

The scope of the USCMI is to support a wide range of maritime innovation critical to a safe, efficient, and competitive MTS.  As directed by Congress, the authorization and direction for the USCMI may evolve with future legislation and executive branch policy imperatives.

About MARAD Office of Environment and Innovation

The Office of Environment and Innovation supports the Maritime Environmental and Technical Assistance (META) program and participates in the development of environmental policy mechanisms that address maritime transportation environmental issues including but not limited to air emissions generated from vessels and ports, aquatic nuisance species in ballast water, and vessel generated underwater noise. Through META, MARAD partners with other government agencies, industry, academia, and non-governmental organizations to develop policy that is supported by sound research.
