USCMI Workshop: Maritime Nuclear Technology Regulatory Barriers

In collaboration with the U.S. Coast Guard

Workshop Overview

Exploring the Future of Nuclear Power in Maritime Operations

The United States Center for Maritime Innovation (USCMI), in collaboration with the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), invites industry leaders and public-sector stakeholders to participate in a focused workshop exploring the future of nuclear power in maritime operations.

This session will bring together representatives from shipping companies, shipyards, ports, small modular reactor (SMR) operators, and technology developers to examine emerging applications of nuclear energy, including vessel propulsion and offshore power generation, and to identify the regulatory and policy barriers impacting progress.

Areas of Focus

Discussion Topics

Through a facilitated discussion, participants will contribute insights on:

01

Planned applications of SMR-powered vessels

02

Development of offshore SMR power systems

03

Key constraints limiting maritime nuclear adoption, with an emphasis on regulatory and policy challenges

04

Potential strategies and solutions to overcome these barriers

We are seeking attendees who can share expertise and perspectives across one or more of these topics and help shape the path forward for maritime nuclear innovation.

Participation

Given space constraints, the USCMI plans to select a limited number of in-person participants but will provide a virtual participation option for all interested parties. The USCMI does not plan to provide any funding to participants for this event, which is intended to facilitate the identification of impediments to the adoption of nuclear power for maritime applications as well as potential solutions to those impediments.

Those wishing to participate can apply via the registration portal by May 29, 2026, noting in person or virtual preference. USCMI will notify applicants seeking in person participation of their status by June 12, 2026, and again, will provide a virtual participation option for those not able to participate in person.
